Wood

Renewable by Nature…… Sustainable by Design

On the West Coast, wood embodies both the design challenges and the opportunities we all face today. Like water this natural resource is symbolic of the balance inherent in our relationship with the earth, partly because it seems so abundant. Trees and forests provide the natural habitat for so many living things. “Wood is universally beautiful and the most humanly intimate of all building materials.” Frank Lloyd Wright

Sustainably harvested wood helps fight climate change. As trees grow, they draw carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and, using solar energy, convert that sunlight into wood. Our best sustainable forest managers today maintain and enhance the long-term health of local natural ecosystems while providing economic, social and cultural opportunities for today and for generations to follow. In construction, wood leads all the environmental trends because no other building material has equally rigorous third party review of its processes. Three credible review programs are: the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Ottawa, Vancouver, the Forest Stewardship Council Canada (FSC) Vancouver, and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Washington DC.

FSC-certified forests protect wildlife habitat & endangered species, ensure clean water by respecting rivers & waterways, are not planted with genetically modified (GM) trees, or converted into plantations. Certified companies must involve local communities & Aboriginal Peoples in the development of forest management plans.
